Louis Colombarini - "The sculpture is made of clay and was inspired by a piece I created for a donation event supporting cancer research in Nashville, TN. The original sculpture had to incorporate a brick, which I broke several up into briquette size pieces and are where I now have the stones.
I brought four stones gathered where the Columbia River enters the Pacific Ocean on a trip to the
Pacific N.W. and made plaster molds, recreating the originals in clay. After I complete the base, platter and sticks from clay I bisque fire the pieces and apply a sprayed copper pigment, which is then
primitive-fired in sawdust.
I choose to use an old gutted refrigerator for my firing chamber. The sprayed clay pieces are then buried in sawdust. The sawdust is then ignited. I close the lid and it begins to smoke and smolder creating individual unique patinas and smoke patterns. (each firing varies dependent on weather conditions)
The final process is cleaning off the residual burned sawdust and fixing the surface with several coats of a clear satin acrylic."
